reciprocal /rᵻˈsɪprəkl/ adj. n. [from Lat. reciprocus “back and forth”, “ebbing and flowing”]
Mutual, returned, corresponded. Reciprocal: this describes the relationship that ties the place to the land, people to artefacts, and objects to nature in Villetta Barrea. And this is the relationship, which became increasingly clear to my eyes as I penetrated the urban and social fabric of the village in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park, that is the focus of my work.
In a community that is about to welcome back the element of water (that of the Sangro river) as a source of new energy, there is a connection that runs through people and things, both natural and man-made, “ebbing and flowing” as only time and water can. An interaction by which, as admirably described by the Istituto della Enciclopedia italiana, “two or more systems, or bodies, or particles, even of different natures, act upon each other, resulting in reciprocal changes in their state or energy.”
My photos aim to capture the strand of this connection by looking for the signs of this reciprocal relationship in faces and things, and in the power and the relentless cyclical character of nature.
Signs that, emerging from the details, express the entire shape of the land – marked by the complex interactions between community and environment and now fuelled by the new ecological awareness and the idea of sustainable development – of this part of the Abruzzo landscape.
reciproco /re’tʃiproko/ agg. [dal lat. reciprocus “che va e viene, che fluisce e rifluisce”]
Scambievole, ricambiato, corrisposto. Reciproco. È il rapporto che a Villetta Barrea lega il luogo al territorio, le persone ai manufatti, gli oggetti alla natura.
È questo rapporto, che si è palesato ai miei occhi in maniera sempre più nitida man mano che mi addentravo nel tessuto urbano e sociale di questo borgo inserito nel cuore del Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, a essere al centro del mio lavoro.
In una comunità che si appresta ad accogliere ancora una volta l’elemento acqua, quella del fiume Sangro, come fonte di nuova energia, vi è un legame che attraversa, “che fluisce e rifluisce” – come solo il tempo e l’acqua sanno fare -,le persone e gli elementi, quelli naturali e quelli antropici.
Una interazione mediante la quale, come mirabilmente descritto dall’Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana[1], “due o più sistemi, o corpi, o particelle, anche di natura diversa, agiscono uno sull’altro, con conseguenti reciproche modificazioni del loro stato o della loro energia”.
Le mie foto intendono cogliere il filo di questo legame cercando i segni di tale reciproco rapportarsi nei volti e nelle cose, nella forza e nella implacabile ciclicità della natura.
Segni che, emergendo dai particolari, esprimono l’intera forma del territorio – segnata dalle complesse interazioni fra comunità e ambiente e ora alimentate dalla nuova coscienza ecologica e dall’idea di sviluppo sostenibile – di questa parte di paesaggio Abruzzese.
